COURSE DESCRIPTION

Esthetics and dermatology, also simply known as Skin Care, is in fact a science. Deciphering strange ingredients on the backs of bottles can be overwhelming – and consulting with a dermatologist or esthetician is the best way to be sure you’re doing what’s right for the skin you’re in – but understanding the structure of skin, how these products work, and the chemistry behind them can help you navigate the available options on your own.

This class will teach you how to understand the chemistry in products, how nutrition affects your skin, how to build a skin care routine, to cleanse properly, to choose the right moisturizer, why using an SPF is so important, and how to naturally manage problems that you may experience with your own skin.

The power of healthy and glowing skin is so much more than skin deep. When you feel wonderful about your skin, you unlock confidence, courage and overall well-being. Glowing skin is a beautiful first impression. Remember, there’s never a chance to make a second “first impression,” so let’s make sure you’re glowing. The first thing we see when meeting someone is actually skin. In these times, where every picture is photoshopped and all imperfections are erased, where the self care and outer beauty is so important, where there is a lot of stress, busy lifestyles and too little time to choose the right products – we need guidance. Your 20s is the perfect time to start caring for your ski, developing a regular sincere routine and taking care off the largest organ of the body – skin!

At the conclusion of this class you will be able to:

  • Describe the structure and function of skin cells
  • List facts about the biggest organ of the body, which is skin
  • Examine and assess your own skin, including skin tine, complexion, and skin problems.
  • Develop solutions on how to improve your skin and how to achieve healthy and youthful looking skin
  • Identify natural and chemical ingredients in skin care products and determine whether they are good or bad for your skin
  • Define skin care terminology like dermis, keratinocytes, hydroquinone, etc.
  • Describe how nutrition cigarettes, lack of sleep and stress affect the skin
  • Summarize the importance of a consistent skin care routine

ONLINE FORMAT

This class will consist of readings and assignments posted on Google Classroom and TWO scheduled zoom sessions (zoom is a video conference app.) You will only have two zoom meetings the first weekend of class, and then work independently on your assignments for the remaining 4 weeks. Please make sure you register for the course with a valid email address, since this is where you will receive an invitation notification to join Google Classroom. Both zoom and Google Classroom are free platforms and easy to use. You will be invited to join Google Classroom a week before class starts. Make sure you check your spam/junk folder, as invitations to join Google Classroom sometimes end up there. Your email must be Google compatible, so it’s best if you use gmail, hotmail or yahoo. If you don’t receive a notification before class starts, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to contact us.

ASSIGNMENTS & COMPLETION CERTIFICATE

All assignments must be successfully completed in order to receive your course completion certificate. Course completion certificates will be uploaded to Google Classroom in a shared folder after class has concluded, and you will be able to download your certificate. If you have a deadline and need your certificate earlier, please indicate it during the registration process (there is a question that asked about early certificate.) You may receive your certificate as early as ONE week after class has started, as long as you complete all assignments successfully and it is confirmed by your instructor.

ATTENDANCE

Attendance during the scheduled zoom sessions IS MANDATORY and we will be taking attendance! If you do not attend these, you will NOT receive a course completion certificate. Meetings are not recorded and there are no make-up sessions. It is not possible to sign up for a new class if you miss the zoom meetings – your will have to pay for a new class! Other than the zoom sessions, the class is self-paced and you will be free to work on your assignments whenever you can. You will have 4 weeks to complete all assignments and course requirements.

ZOOM SESSIONS

Please note that all zoom sessions are scheduled in Eastern Time (New York City). Please check which time zone you are in, and make sure you attend the zoom sessions on time!
