5 Ways to Manage Stress
Stress is a natural reaction to a new, unknown environment or activity.
Sometimes, those first few weeks with your host family can be overwhelming as you learn their routines and find a way to fit into the family’s lifestyle. Here are a few things you can do to stay calm and stress-free this au pair year:
1. Communicate
Remember this is new for the family as well so be open about your thoughts and make sure you allow your host parents to communicate their expectations up front to avoid any unnecessary confusion.
2. Exercise
Even if it’s just a walk around the block, moving your body is key to staying upbeat and positive in stressful moments. Make it a habit to get out into the sunshine, work up a sweat, and get your heart moving. You’ll quickly notice a positive change in your mood and your mindset.
3. Share your culture
Being away from home can take a toll on you, especially as you continue to integrate into a new family here in America. Don’t be afraid to cook a traditional dish from your country, teach the kids a cultural dance, or even some phrases in your language. Sharing your culture is a great learning experience for the children and a wonderful way to feel less isolated from your life back home.
4. Connect with other au pairs
If your agency has monthly au pair meetings – attend them! Some au pairs find that the easiest, and least intimidating way, to meet new people would be to join groups on Facebook. Host a book club or a happy hour and enjoy some time sharing your experience with people who know what you’re going through.
5. Get Help
If you’re feeling too overwhelmed, it might be time to seek help from a therapist. Check in with your agency and/or your health insurance to see what options are available to you and follow up with someone who can help. Being an au pair is a tough transition, but it should not be so stressful that you are always miserable, depressed, or anxious. Pay attention to your body and get help when you need it.
