COURSE DESCRIPTION

**Prerequisites in order to take this class:

– Students are required to bring a DSLR camera to class. Smartphones are not allowed for this advanced photography class.
– Students should have a basic understanding of photography fundamentals and be proficient in using DSLR or equivalent cameras. Familiarity with basic image editing software is advantageous but not mandatory.

In this advanced photography class, you will embark on an immersive journey through captivating landscapes on the island of Kauai, while honing your photography skills using a DSLR camera. This course is designed for those seeking to expand their knowledge and expertise in photography while exploring the lush landscape of Kauai. The course will include a combination of lectures, practical fieldwork, hands-on workshops, group discussions, image critiques, and a final portfolio presentation.

Known as “The Garden Isle,” visiting Kauai is any photographer’s dream! The breathtaking island is characterized by its wealth of vast tropical rainforests, jaw-dropping mountains and stunning beaches. Part of Kauai’s unique charm is the fact that the island has remained relatively undeveloped. Visitors benefit from this by enjoying views of Kauai’s pristine, untouched Napali Coast cliffs where waterfalls sprinkle into the ocean, its majestic Mount Waialeale and other scenic treasures such as Hanalei Bay and Haena, both bathed in hues of green and blue.

You will be exploring the entire island of Kauai and its most beautiful photography spots, including the Na Pali Coast, Waimea Canyon State Park, Poipu Beach Park, Princeville Botanical Gardens, Hanalei Bay, Wailua Falls and more.

Course Objectives:

1. Mastering Camera Technology:
Students will gain a deeper understanding of DSLR and equivalent camera technologies, including advanced settings, lenses, accessories, etc.

2. Advanced Composition and Lighting Techniques:
Participants will learn advanced composition principles and lighting techniques to create visually striking and impactful photographs in various lighting conditions.

3. Landscape and Nature Photography:
Emphasis will be placed on capturing the stunning natural landscapes and unique flora and fauna of the Big Island. Students will learn composition, exposure, and post-processing techniques specific to landscape and nature photography.

4. Portrait Photography and Environmental Portraiture:
Students will explore the art of capturing compelling portraits, utilizing natural light. The course will also cover environmental portraiture, incorporating the island’s cultural and natural elements into stunning landscape portraits.

5. Night and Long Exposure Photography:
Techniques for capturing captivating nightscapes and long exposure shots will be taught, taking advantage of the island’s pristine night skies and volcanic landscapes.

6. Post-Processing and Editing:
Students will learn advanced post-processing and editing techniques using software like Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop to enhance and refine their images.

7. Photographic Storytelling:
The course will cover the art of visual storytelling through photography, enabling students to convey narratives and emotions effectively in their work.

8. Portfolio Development and Critiques:
Students will have the opportunity to build a portfolio of their best work, receive constructive feedback from both peers and the instructor, and refine their skills based on critiques.

ASSIGNMENTS & COMPLETION CERTIFICATE

In addition to the in-person class hours in Kauai, this course will include pre-assignments and follow-up assignment as part of the 72-hour class.

You will be invited to join Google Classroom a month before class starts, which is the platform we use for all our assignments. Check your junk or spam folder, as invitations to join Google Classroom sometimes end up there. Please make sure you register for the course with a valid email address, since this is where you will receive the invitation. Your email has to be Google compatible, so it’s best to use gmail, hotmail or yahoo. If you do not receive a notification to join Google Classroom, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to contact us.

Pre-assignments will be posted on Google Classroom 3 weeks before class starts. Make sure you join Google Classroom early and complete the assignments BEFORE coming to class. It will take you approximately 12 hours to complete them.

Follow-up assignments will be posted on Google Classroom on the weekend of class, and also consist of 12 hours. You must complete them in order to receive your course completion certificate. Course completion certificates will be emailed to you a few days after the assignment deadline. You will have 4 weeks to complete the assignments. If you need your certificate earlier, please indicate it during the registration process and upload proof of deadline.

All assignments must be completed in order to receive your course completion certificate!

 

ATTENDANCE

Attendance IS MANDATORY all days during the class in Kauai. If you are late or leave early, your will risk not receiving your certificate. Please note, that this is a long weekend intensive class and the days are long. Bring comfortable shoes, water, snacks, sunglasses, sunscreen. We expect you to come to class rested and ready to participate, learn and have fun!

** Detailed agenda, schedule and information will be shared on Google Classroom 2 weeks prior to class start date. All registered students will connect via WhatsApp, giving an opportunity to get to know each other before the trip and make plans to share an Uber from the airport, which is approximately $20-30.
